Mehbooba Mufti on Triple Talaq Bill: BJP is entering our houses, bill will disturb Muslims families

SRINAGAR, DEC 31 (PTK): Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti jumped into the ongoing debate on Triple Talak Bill accusing the BJP of entering Muslim households while asserting that the saffron party was trying to interfere in the personal lives of the community.

Training is gun on the Bill, Mufti made an emotional appeal saying she had herself gone through a broken marriage and the biggest challenge she faced was the economic depravity. The BJP and Opposition parties have locked horns over the 3-year jail provision for the accused under the Bill. “After creating division on religious and sectarian lines, BJP now wants to divide Muslim families through Triple Talaq bill,” she said.

“Muslims pride themselves for strong family structure and bonding. Same is true of other religions in the East, which is considered as an advantage over the Western culture. This bill is a direct assault on that,” she added.

“Indian Muslims and we from Jammu and Kashmir which is a Muslim majority state decided to stay with Gandhi’s secular democratic India and let us not convert it into Zia-ul-Haq’s nation,” Mehbooba said.

The firebrand Kashmiri leader said she also underwent a broken marriage and that women the biggest challenges if their marriage is broken. “I’ve gone through a broken marriage and I feel that women face the biggest challenge economically after their marriage is broken… When we talk about reservations for Muslims, the BJP rejects it on religious lines. But when it comes to this kind of law, then they run to Parliament,” she said.

She alleged that the BJP, through this Bill, aims to divide Muslim families, adding that with an economic crackdown on Muslims through curbs on meat and leather trade, the Triple Talaq Bill will trigger a social crisis and impoverish Muslims further.

“Democracy is not run through brute majority, it is about consensus. Muslims accepted the Supreme Court’s decision on the invalidity of triple talaq, unlike the Sabarimala verdict. It’s best to empower Muslim women to be able to face the world independently in case of a break-up,” Mufti tweeted on Monday.

Meanwhile, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also made a remark on similar lines, saying the government is trying to interfere in the religious rights of Indian Muslims in the name of Muslim women’s empowerment. Further, former NDA partner and Andhra Pradesh CM has also come out protesting against the Bill calling Modi a blackmailer.

The Muslim Women Bill (Triple Talaq) 2018 has been tabled in Rajya Sabha, after being passed by the Lok Sabha by an overwhelming majority. However, the Opposition has prepared a strategy to stall the Bill. They have issued a whip to all its Rajya Sabha members to remain present in the House.

As for the stats, BJP has 73 members in the Upper House along with its 12 allies, while the Opposition has 160 members. (PTK)
